A Russian jet has made several close-range passes near a US warship in the Black Sea over the weekend amid rising tensions in the region, the US military said.

An official said the Russian fighter jet made a dozen passes, and flew within 1,000 yards of Navy destroyer USS Donald Cook at around 500ft above sea level.

The Russian aircraft reportedly did not respond to several radio queries and warnings from the US warship.

However, the jet did not appear to be armed and was never in danger of coming in contact with the US ship, the official said. There was no exchange of fire.

Pentagon spokesman Army Colonel Steve Warren called the action "provocative and unprofessional".

The Cook, which carries helicopters, was deployed to the Black Sea on April 10 in the wake of the Russian military takeover of Ukraine's Crimea region.

US military officials have said the deployment is part of an effort to reassure allies and partners in the region.

The West has accused Moscow of inciting the unrest.

The flyover came as pro-Russian forces deepened their insurgency in Ukraine's east, seizing more than a dozen government offices.

Meanwhile, CIA Director John Brennan has met face-to-face with officials in Kiev.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed Mr Brennan's weekend visit to the Ukrainian capital as part of his trip to Europe.

The visit appeared to irritate Moscow, which has reportedly urged Washington to explain what Mr Brennan was doing in Ukraine.

Ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has accused the CIA of encouraging Ukrainian authorities to conduct tactical operations - a claim the US agency denies.

On Monday, President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin spoke for the first time in two weeks , but there was little sign of agreement.
